One of the best things about travelling? The food, of course! Every destination has its own favourites – the dishes locals swear by and visitors can’t stop talking about. To make things easier, we’ve picked out four must-try treats from this region, with a little flavour of what they’re all about.
So… which one’s making your mouth water?
Wiener Schnitzel is a tender veal cutlet, coated in seasoned breadcrumbs and fried to perfection. And yes, by Austrian law, it must be veal to earn the name! Often served with a wedge of lemon and a side of potatoes or salad, it’s a must-try bite of Austrian pride.
Simple, satisfying, and oh-so-Austrian, Erdäpfelsalat is a traditional potato salad with a Vienna twist. Made from tender boiled potatoes and finely sliced onions, it’s dressed in a tangy mix of vinegar, oil, and mustard – no mayo in sight! Light yet full of flavour, it’s often eaten as a side with Wiener Schnitzel.
Straight from the mountains of Tyrol, Tiroler Gröstl combines crispy fried potatoes, onions, and tender bits of beef or pork, all sizzled together in butter until golden and glorious. It’s crowned with a fried egg and often served with a zingy side of pickles or horseradish.
No trip to Austria is complete without a helping of apple strudel, the country’s signature dessert. This flaky, golden pastry wraps around a spiced filling of sliced apples, sugar and cinnamon. Dusted with icing sugar and best enjoyed warm, it’s a treat that’s as elegant as it is indulgent.
Titanic Belfast®
Titanic Belfast® is the ultimate love letter to the RMS Titanic, where the legendary ship's tale began! This award-winning exhibition immerses visitors in the ship’s luxurious origins, thrilling launch, and tragic finale, showcasing the highs and lows of maritime history.
